International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA Rivers State Chapter, has called on Rivers State Police Command to arrest and prosecute all those involved in the debasement and inhumane act meted out on an Elderly woman, Ann Sobrekon Eremie, sometime last week.
Ann Eremie who is suffering from dementia, a medical condition of memory loss, was said to have been beaten up, stripped naked, tagged to be a witch and her naked video made viral on social media by some group of people in Rivers State.
Reacting to the incident, Chairperson FIDA Rivers, Adata Bio-Briggs, in an interview with our correspondent, condemned the act as barbaric and infringement of the victims fundamental human right, which has left the family members devastated and traumatized on seeing her naked video go viral on social media for no offence committed.
The FIDA Chairperson further demand justice for the victim, noting that it is an offence punishable under section 34 of the 1999 Constitution, while urging the Police Command to conduct a proper investigation in the matter.
“Prior to making this release, we have been in touch with the family of Madam Ann Sobrekon Eremie who have confirmed that she has issues of dementia which is a medical condition.
“It is sad that she was made to go through that inhuman and barbaric act instead of being shielded. As citizens, we must learn to respect the elderly and offer them care, instead of pain and educate ourselves so we do not run foul of the law.
“Madam Ann Sobrekon Eremie and her family have been severely traumatised due to this emotional and psychological abuse.
“Be that as it may, we hereby call on law enforcement officers to investigate, fish out and prosecute the perpetrators of the inane act who were particularly featured in the live video making the rounds on the Internet.”
Bio-Briggs, however, reiterated FIDA’s commitment in ensuring the victims get justice to the later, to serve as deterrent to others in the society who are fond of abusing the fundamental rights of people.
“FIDA RIVERS stands for Justice and we demand that Justice be done.”
