Four Delta varsity students, travellers reportedly abducted by gunmen

About four students of the Delta State University, Abraka, and five other travellers have reportedly been kidnapped by yet-to-be-identified gunmen on the Abraka-Eku Road in Ethiope-East local government area of the state.

The victims, identified as Arogbo Seyifunmi, Azunobi Prosper, Miracle Robert, and Adegor Aghogho Happiness, were all 500-level students of the Department of Chemistry and Electrical Engineering, respectively, Punch reports.

However, the identities of the other five travellers are still unknown as of the time of the report.

The students, who had recently concluded their final examinations, were travelling home for festivities when they were attacked.

A statement by the students’ union of the institution revealed that the gunmen had demanded a ransom of N5million.

“It is very shameful to the state government and security agencies that they have done nothing to stop the incessant attacks on students and citizens after reports and official complaints have been made about the Eku-Abraka Expressway,” the statement read in part.

The student’s union called on the Delta State Government to deploy strategies to deal with insecurity in the state, especially along the Abraka-Eku Expressway.

It also urged the residents of the community to remain calm and not resort to actions that could endanger the lives of the abducted persons, noting that the authorities are doing all they can to rescue the kidnapped students.

“We are in constant communication with the police and the state Department of State Services, and we are working with them to save the abducted students in the shortest time possible,” it added.
