The lady who was reported to have caused the fire outbreak in the Captain Amangala Waterfront axis of Port Harcourt in Rivers State is still unconscious as of the time of filing this report.
Our correspondent gathered from an eyewitness, Ngozi Godstime that the lady was boiling water for tea at about 7 am when her cooking gas exploded.
Godstime said, “I was there when the inferno occurred and the lady that caused the fire outbreak is my neighbour.
“She was boiling water for tea in the morning when her cooking gas exploded into flames and burnt her too.
“She was immediately rushed to a medical centre for treatment and as I speak to you, the report from the hospital said she is still unconscious.
“After five rooms were immediately razed by the fire, other builds were also torched which I can not quantify.
“The fire lasted for almost an hour and wouldn’t have destroyed more houses if the fire fighting officials had arrived on time.”
For the past few weeks, multiple fire outbreaks had occurred in different parts of Port Harcourt, the state capital.
Some of the areas that had been engulfed by fire are: D/,line, Nembe Waterfront, Elechi waterfront in Diobu and Captain Amangala Waterfront among others.
A waterfront community leader, Joshua Amgbara told our correspondent that the Nembe Waterfront inferno occurred when a careless cigarette smoker was smoking closer to a wooden boat loaded with drums of fuel and other combustible liquid.
He said the incident claimed many lives before the fire was put out by a concerted effort of youths and fire fighting officials.
