The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Monday, announced sweeping measures to be adhered to so as to curtail the spread of the dreaded coronavirus in Rivers State.
Although the state was yet to record a single case of the virus, Wike said the government is committed to safeguarding residents of the state.
The measures whose implementation will begin today include the closing of all public parks like the Pleasure Park, Isaac Boro Park, Children’s game parks, etc.
All the night clubs and cinemas will remain closed until further notice. So no more grooving till the coronavirus is wiped out whichever way.
All religious houses will be shut down so pray in your homes, cars or your office spaces and alone or just with the members of your family.
If you fixed your weddings or burial of a loved one for the end of the month or anytime in April, there is bad news for you: weddings and burials have been banned. Furthermore, religious and traditional leaders have been urged to discourage you from flouting these temporary rules. Local government chairmen have also been empowered to stop burials and weddings in their domains.
Also, there will be Surveillance Posts at the different borders of the state:
(1) Emohua for motorists coming from Bayelsa and States
(2) Omerelu for motorists coming from Owerri
(3) Okehi for motorists coming from Imo State through Etche
(4) Akwuzie in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area for motorists coming from Imo State
(5)Oyigbo Toll Gate for motorists coming from Aba and
(6)Opoku in Khana Local Government Area for motorists coming from Akwa Ibom State.
Others at the marine entry points: Port Harcourt and Onne Ports, Nembe, Bille, Bonny and NLNG Jetties are also going to be under surveillance.
Wike said that each of the Surveillance Posts shall be manned by trained health and security personnel who will ensure that motorists and seafarers are tested before they are allowed to enter the State.
He also urged motorists and seafarers to cooperate with the Surveillance teams as they have been empowered to legitimately enforce this directive,” Governor Wike said.
The Governor added: “I use this medium to call on citizens to minimise family visits . Rather , everyone should maintain contacts through the use of telephones. ”
