Rumors of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara’s planned defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Action People’s Party (APP) have gained significant traction. The move is reportedly driven by the alleged hijacking of the PDP structure in the state by his predecessor and estranged political godfather, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
National Chairman of the Action People’s Party, Uche Nnadi, hinted at the development while addressing journalists in Port Harcourt on Monday. Nnadi condemned the recent bombing of the APP secretariat, describing it as a “treasonable and terrorist act” by criminal elements.
“It is really a sad day for democracy. We condemn the bombing of our Rivers State chapter secretariat in strong terms. It is a heinous act, an act of terrorism, a treasonable act,” Nnadi stated. He expressed gratitude that no lives were lost in the incident, which occurred after a strategic meeting by party members.
Nnadi linked the bombing to the upcoming local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024, stating that the APP is poised to make a significant impact. “As a party, we are not deterred. We are sure that they are getting the signal of Rivers people joining our party en masse in preparation for the forthcoming local government elections, and they want to undermine this good policy of our amiable Governor of Rivers State, who wants to conduct local government elections.”
According to Nnadi, the attack was in furtherance of the plot by the opposition to frustrate the LG polls.
“We know how they have been shopping for one court order or the other all over the federation trying to stop the forthcoming local government elections.
“They have seen that they have not been able to achieve that and have now resorted to violence. They want to stop the process and the good policies of the governor at all costs.
It bears mentioning that the Party Chairman confidently asserted that the APP is the party to beat in the forthcoming local government elections, hinting at Governor Fubara’s planned move to the party. “We are the party to beat in the forthcoming local government elections. We are sure of winning the elections because Rivers people are joining us en masse.”
