Fubara Provides ₦100m Aid To Tackle Environmental Threat

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State on Wednesday announced interim relief measures for residents of Bille Kingdom, as his administration steps up efforts to tackle the environmental degradation affecting the community.

Juliana Masi, Head of the Information and Public Relations Unit in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), stated that Fubara expressed deep concern for the health and well-being of Bille residents during a working visit to the community in Degema Local Government Area.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s determination to find a lasting solution to the persistent gas emissions contaminating the land and water sources in Bille Kingdom, an issue that has plagued the area since November 2025. Represented by the SSG, Dagogo Wokoma, Fubara announced immediate interventions to address urgent needs.

These include the provision of potable water and essential healthcare services, funded through ₦100 million released as palliative support for the affected residents. Although unable to attend in person due to pressing state commitments, Fubara assured the people that the government is fully aware of the situation and is committed to tackling the root causes of the environmental challenges.

He emphasised that the current measures are temporary relief while long-term solutions are being implemented. The governor also called on community members to remain law-abiding and continue supporting his administration, noting the government’s record of fulfilling its promises.

During the visit, Chief Bennet Dokubo, Chairman of the Council of Chiefs for Bille Kingdom, welcomed the intervention, describing Fubara as a leader who listens to the people’s concerns. He urged the government to take urgent action on the gas emissions, which he highlighted as a serious threat to human health. Fubara also inspected several areas affected by the emissions, underscoring his administration’s commitment to addressing the crisis.
