Bekanwa Used Political Power to Unite Cult Groups – Police Officer Tells Court

Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has adjourned till the 19th and 26th of May 9th and 15th of June 2026 for two defendants, former Caretaker Committee Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Sunny Bekanwa and one Henry Barikui-Dele to open their defense in a murder case against them.

At the resumed hearing, the Police Investigation Officer attached to the Anti Cultism Unit of the State Police Command, Inspector Stephen  Ntibmouwei entered the witness box to close the prosecution case.

Speaking from the witness box, the police investigation officer informed the court that the activities of Sunny Bekanwa in Kpean community in Khana Local government Area of the state led to the murder of Dr Lucky Keena and Engineer Deyaa Dunsara.

The Assistant Superintendent of Police told the court that Mr. Bekanwa used his political position to dethrone and install Chiefs and traditional rulers of his choice.

He stated before the court that the accused  also used the same opportunity to bring all the secret cult group together under one platform known as Ngwongwo and became the anchor head.

Responding to questions on the reason why he so relied on the security report by Bori Division following petition by the leadership of Kpean community against Bekanwa, the investigative police officer said he relied on the security report based on the evidence contained in the video and audio clips already before the court.

The presiding judge, Justice I.P.C IGWE after listening to the cross examination gave the new adjournment to enable the defense to open their case.

Henry Barikui-Dele and Sunny Bekanwa are standing trial over their alleged membership of a secret cult that on different dates in 2018, murdered the late Dr Lucky Keena and Engineer Deyas Dunsara in Kpean community

On the last adjourned date, Police Investigation Officer attached to Anti Cultism Unit of the State Police Command, Inspector Stephen Ntibmouwei had presented a video and recorded audio clips of a voluntarily confessional statement of Henry Barikui-Dele where he implicated the second dependent, Sunny Bekanwa.
