Taiwo Awoniyi could face disciplinary action from the The Football Association following his goal celebration during Nottingham Forest F.C.’s 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur F.C. on Sunday.
The Nigerian striker came off the bench to score Forest’s third goal, sealing an important win in their fight against relegation. However, his celebration has drawn scrutiny.
Awoniyi removed his shirt after scoring—an act that earned him an automatic yellow card—but also revealed an undershirt bearing the message “God is the greatest.”
According to Law 4 of the International Football Association Board, players are prohibited from displaying political, religious, or personal messages on their equipment, including undergarments. The rule states that such actions may result in further sanctions beyond an in-game booking.
The regulation also notes that offenders can face additional disciplinary measures from competition organisers, national associations, or even FIFA.
As a result, Awoniyi could now be subject to further punishment despite his contribution to the victory.
