AI, Surveillance Can Address Nigerian Insecurity – ICT Specialist

‎‎Mr, Nguma Tyokaha, who is currently identified as an expert in Information and Communication Technology, asserts that Nigeria has the potential to significantly reduce kidnapping and other security threats through the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI), predictive analytics, and smart surveillance systems that are adapted to local conditions.‎‎

Nguma Tyokaha stated clearly during his recent discussion with Radio Nigeria, that although AI lacks human qualities, it has the ability to analyze extensive datasets, identify patterns, and assist in decision-making, rendering it a formidable tool for contemporary security operations.‎‎

However, the ICT expert elaborated that AI could be utilized to forecast kidnapping hotspots throughout Nigeria by examining historical data, which includes locations, timelines, victim profiles, and criminal behaviors. Such systems can produce “heat maps” that pinpoint high-risk areas, thereby enabling both citizens and security agencies to implement preventive strategies.

‎‎Community Policing Meets Smart Technology‎‎Tyokaha stressed the importance of developing a Nigerian-specific “sovereign AI system” that is trained on local data sourced from police records, intelligence reports, community vigilantes, and media archives.‎‎

He highlighted that the combination of real-time data from security agencies with historical records would empower authorities to identify emerging threats and react promptly.‎‎ He also advocated for the incorporation of AI into community policing initiatives, suggesting that automated emergency systems and hotlines could enhance collaboration between local communities and security agencies.‎‎

“With AI, even local police departments can utilise intelligence tools without being overly dependent on central command structures,” he stated, noting that such decentralisation would improve rapid response, especially in rural regions.‎‎Tyokaha indicated that edge AI systems technology could be implemented in remote areas, ensuring comprehensive national coverage despite existing infrastructure challenges.
