A 29-year-old suspect, Robinson Uche, has confessed to his role in the killing of a 42-year-old man, Shedrack Chukwem, and led police operatives to the shallow grave where the victim was buried in Etche Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State.
The Rivers State Police Command spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Wednesday.
The Command said the suspect was arrested in the early hours of 6 March 2026 by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit, Emuohia Annex, following sustained investigative efforts.
During interrogation, Uche reportedly admitted to participating in the crime, which occurred on 17 December 2025. He told investigators that he and four others were allegedly contracted to bring the deceased to a location believed to be connected to a community leader.
The situation, however, escalated when their attempt to apprehend the victim failed, leading to the fatal shooting of Chukwem.
According to the police, the group subsequently transported the body to a bush in Ekerre-Ugbor, where it was hastily buried in a shallow grave.
Acting on the suspect’s confession, police operatives were led to the burial site, where the remains were recovered and later deposited at the Military Hospital mortuary for autopsy.
The Command said efforts are ongoing to arrest other suspects linked to the incident, who remain at large.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Olugbenga Adepoju, assured the public of the Command’s commitment to justice, noting that all those connected to the crime would be tracked and brought to book.
