Suspected Gunmen Shoot Timber Truck Driver Dead in Ahoada East

Suspected gunmen have shot dead a timber truck driver along the Abua–Ahoada East Road in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, leaving residents of the area in (LGA) shock and fear.

The incident was said to have occurred at about 10 p.m. on Thursday when the driver, whose identity had yet to be confirmed as of the time of filing this report, was reportedly conveying a truckload of timber to Port Harcourt.

Sources in the area said the assailants intercepted the vehicle along the road and opened fire on the driver, killing him on the spot before fleeing the scene.

A video circulating on social media showed residents and cyclists who gathered at the scene expressing disbelief over the development, says Independent report.

In the footage, a man who claimed to know the deceased identified the victim as one of his workers and insisted that the driver had committed no offence to warrant such an attack.

Lamenting in the video, the man said the victim had only transported timber and was on his way to offload it in Port Harcourt when he was shot.

The killing has heightened anxiety among residents of Ahoada East and surrounding communities, with many calling on security agencies to step up patrols and restore confidence in the safety of the area.

As of the time of filing this report, the Rivers State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
