14 Million Nigerians Linked to Drug Use History, Report Warns

Nigeria is grappling with a growing burden of substance abuse, with an estimated 14 million citizens reported to have a history of drug use, according to the State of Health of the Nation Report 2025.

The report, released on Wednesday in Abuja under the framework of the National Health Act (2014), highlights substance abuse as a major public health and social challenge, particularly among men and young people.

Furthermore, it noted that the rising prevalence of drug use is closely linked to increasing cases of mental health disorders, placing additional strain on Nigeria’s healthcare system and social services.

According to the report, government agencies intensified prevention campaigns and awareness drives throughout 2025 to address the problem.

These efforts were carried out in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and other stakeholders to promote early intervention and discourage substance misuse.

Public health officials say that tackling drug abuse requires sustained education and community engagement, as well as improved access to mental health support services.

The report also indicates that Nigeria is making gradual progress in integrating mental health care into primary healthcare facilities across the country. As part of this effort, more than 3,000 primary healthcare workers have been trained to recognise common mental health conditions and refer affected individuals to appropriate treatment centres.

Health authorities believe this initiative will help expand early detection of mental health issues and reduce the stigma that often prevents people from seeking help.

Despite these developments, the report cautions that significant gaps remain in service utilisation and access to care, particularly in rural communities where mental health resources are limited.

It therefore calls for sustained investment in preventive programmes, expanded treatment services and stronger partnerships between government agencies, healthcare providers and community organisations.

The State of Health of the Nation Report provides an annual overview of Nigeria’s health sector, assessing progress, identifying emerging challenges and outlining priority areas for action in strengthening the country’s health system.
