Rivers Senator Joins APC

The Senator representing Rivers West Senatorial District, Ipalibo Banigo, has joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Announcing her defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Banigo said she decided to align politically with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

She explained that the move was intended to support Fubara’s efforts to advance development in the state and to back the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Banigo announced her resignation from the PDP in a letter read on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. A video of Akpabio reading the letter was later posted on the Senate’s official Facebook page.

According to her, the decision to defect followed extensive consultations with her constituents, political associates, and key stakeholders across her senatorial district. She added that the move was also prompted by growing internal divisions, leadership disputes, and ongoing litigations within the PDP, which she said had adversely affected the party’s cohesion.

Banigo further stated that her decision was informed by her resolve to join her political mentor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in supporting Tinubu’s re-election bid and enabling the President to continue his economic reforms.

According to her, Tinubu’s reforms have improved the economy, enhanced currency stability, and driven infrastructure development across the country.

Banigo also expressed appreciation for Tinubu’s role in fostering political stability and strengthening governance in Rivers State. She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, in advancing initiatives that positively impact the lives of Nigerians.

After reading the letter, Akpabio welcomed Banigo to the ruling party, saying a seat had already been prepared for her and others who might soon join.

With Banigo’s defection, the number of politicians aligning with the APC increased. Just a day earlier, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal and his deputy, Mani Mummuni, also defected to the party as politicians begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
