With political activities gradually gathering momentum ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has issued a firm warning to officers against engaging in partisan conduct, declaring that any breach of neutrality will attract strict disciplinary measures.
Addressing strategic Police Managers at a high-level meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, 4 March 2026, the IGP emphasised that the credibility of the electoral process rests significantly on the professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force.
He, however, noted that as the lead agency in internal security, the Police must remain impartial before, during and after the elections.
Disu stressed that the current leadership of the Force maintains zero tolerance for political alignment by its personnel. According to him, officers found compromising their duties through political bias would be sanctioned in line with established regulations.
The Police chief further underscored the importance of proactive security planning, urging commanders to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve information-sharing mechanisms across formations nationwide. He said effective coordination would be vital in preventing disruptions and ensuring a peaceful electoral environment.
Beyond election security, the IGP acknowledged the link between officers’ welfare and operational efficiency. He assured that greater attention would be paid to improving working conditions and morale, adding that a motivated workforce is critical to delivering credible policing outcomes.
Calling for public cooperation, Disu described the Police as partners in national stability and urged citizens to support security agencies with timely and useful information.
He also expressed appreciation to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the confidence reposed in him to lead the Nigeria Police Force, pledging to discharge his responsibilities with courage, integrity and fairness
