The Rivers State Government has intensified efforts to combat cancer, screening over 1,000 residents and taking a large-scale awareness campaign to major streets in Port Harcourt.
The screening, which covered cervical, prostate, and breast cancer, formed part of a statewide sensitisation walk organised by the State Ministry of Health on February 28, 2026. Officials say the initiative is aimed at promoting early detection and encouraging residents to seek timely medical care.

Speaking at the Dr. Peter Odili Cancer and Cardiovascular Hospital, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Prof. Justina Jumbo, urged residents to utilise available screening services, noting that early diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes. She emphasised that several screening services are offered free or at subsidised rates to increase accessibility.
Chief Executive Officer Tony Rahme said the 65-bed specialist facility focuses on oncology care, cardiovascular treatment, and kidney transplant services. He noted that international specialists are working alongside local professionals to strengthen capacity and ensure sustainable healthcare delivery.
The Director of Medical Services at the ministry, Dr. Wachuku Vincent, said the government plans to expand cancer awareness and screening programmes to all 23 local government areas. He added that follow-up care for screened patients is being provided at reduced cost.
Authorities say the hospital, inaugurated in September 2025, continues to serve patients from within and beyond the state.
