Rivers Govt Introduces Newborn Screening Programme

The Rivers State Government, led by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has launched a Newborn Screening Programme to tackle infant mortality and enhance the health of children across the state.

Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu announced the initiative at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) in Port Harcourt, describing it as a major step towards ensuring that every newborn receives a healthy start in life. She explained that newborn screening is a simple yet highly effective medical procedure that can detect genetic, metabolic, hormonal, and congenital conditions early—often before symptoms appear.

Early detection, she said, allows for timely medical intervention, improving survival rates and long-term well-being.Odu emphasised that the programme reflects the government’s commitment to preventive healthcare and strengthening health services.

She highlighted the significant budgetary allocation to the health sector for 2025 and pointed to the administration’s support for the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP), noting that healthcare is a key focus for social development.

“The Newborn Screening Programme is more than a health service; it is an investment in the future of Rivers State, benefiting families and society at large,” she added, commending RSUTH’s management and staff for their dedication. RSUTH Management Board Chairman Tamunoiyoriari Sampson Parker praised the hospital leadership for advancing healthcare delivery and called for sustained government support.

RSUTH Chief Medical Director Prof. Chizindu Alikor stated that the initiative is central to reducing neonatal and under-five mortality. He explained that the hospital has introduced a comprehensive neonatal screening package for babies born at RSUTH and across the state, under the “Health for All Rivers People” agenda. “Early diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions dramatically improve health outcomes and quality of life,” Alikor said.
