Gov. Fubara Appoints New SSG, COS

The Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has appointed Dr. Dagogo Wokoma as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Mr. Sunny Ewule as the new Chief of Staff .

Mr Wokoma took over from his predecessor, Benibo Anabraba, who assumed office immediately after the expiration of the state of emergency while the new Chief of Staff (COS) in the person of Sunny Ewule is replacing Edison Ehie, who had been with him since the political quagmire in the state.

Both appointments, which take immediate effect, were contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onwuka Nzeshi, on Thursday.

The new appointees will be sworn in at 2 pm today at the Executive Council Chamber, Government House, Port Harcourt.

The appointments, announced by the Government House in Port Harcourt, come at a time of sustained political realignments linked to the rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The office of the Secretary to the State Government plays a central role in coordinating government policies and supervising inter-ministerial implementation, while the Chief of Staff manages the Governor’s Office and serves as a critical gatekeeper in executive decision-making. Changes in these roles are often viewed as indicators of shifting influence within the administration.

Political analysts suggest the appointments may represent Governor Fubara’s continued effort to consolidate his authority and strengthen loyalty within the core administrative structure of the state government, especially in light of the prolonged political standoff that has shaped Rivers State’s governance landscape in recent months.

The relationship between Fubara and Wike has remained a defining factor in the state’s political discourse since the governor assumed office, with alignments within the executive and legislative arms frequently reflecting broader factional interests.

With Dr. Wokoma and Mr. Ewule now occupying two of the most strategic positions in the state government, attention will likely focus on how the appointments influence the balance of power and administrative direction in Rivers State going forward.
