Dave Of Africa Raises Alarm Over Soaring House Rents in Port Harcourt

Media personality Dave Owudogu, popularly known as Dave of Africa, has raised fresh concerns over the continuous increase in house rents in Port Harcourt, warning that the situation is becoming unbearable for many residents.

Speaking on the issue, he lamented that the steady rise in rental costs is making decent accommodation increasingly unaffordable for the average person.

He explained that if the trend continues, those who can currently afford a two-bedroom flat may soon only be able to pay for a one-bedroom apartment. Likewise, people renting one-bedroom flats could be forced to move into self-contained apartments, while those in self-contain may eventually have no option but to settle for single rooms.

He also criticised reports of landlords increasing rent by as much as 80 percent, describing the hikes as excessive and destabilising. According to him, such increments are leaving many families stranded, with some tenants now paying more in rent than their monthly income.

Dave further noted that the housing crisis is already affecting almost everyone in the city, revealing that many families have started relocating to their hometowns and communities due to the rising cost of living.

He called on the government to urgently intervene and introduce policies that will regulate rental prices and make housing more affordable, warning that failure to act could push more residents into homelessness.
