The Rivers State Government (RSG) has warned motorists and transport operators to stop harassing Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) while they carry out their lawful duties across the state.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Ministry of Transport, the government urged members of the public to desist from obstructing, intimidating or assaulting VIOs during routine road enforcement exercises.
In the statement obtained by The Port City (TCPN), the government stressed that such conduct was unlawful and would not be tolerated.
According to the statement, VIOs are legally mandated to ensure that vehicles operating on public roads are roadworthy, properly documented and compliant with traffic regulations.

Their activities, the government noted, are aimed at safeguarding lives, reducing road accidents and promoting an orderly transport system within the state.
The warning, the ministry explained, became necessary following a rise in cases of verbal abuse, threats and physical attacks against officers in the course of their duties.
The government described such actions as unacceptable and a clear violation of the law.
The government therefore called on motorists and transport operators to cooperate fully with inspection officers during routine checks.
The government reminded the public that anyone found harassing, assaulting or obstructing government officials performing lawful duties would face the full weight of the law.
Reaffirming its position, the state government reiterated its commitment to ensuring safe, efficient and well-regulated transportation for all residents, adding that respect for traffic enforcement officials remains essential to achieving that goal.
