Rapid Fire Service Response Prevents Tanker Explosion in Ph

A potential fire disaster was averted in Port Harcourt following the quick intervention of the Rivers State Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service after a petroleum tanker accident.

The tanker overturned near the Nkpogu Roundabout on Elekahia Road, a strategic route connecting the residential Elekahia area to the industrial Trans-Amadi zone. The incident immediately raised fears of an explosion, as the tanker’s highly flammable contents could spill onto the roadway.

Emergency responders arrived promptly and initiated safety measures to contain the situation, dispersing fuel vapours and securing the fallen tanker to prevent ignition.

The accident occurred during the early hours of the day when commuters, including students and workers, were already using the road. Security personnel and residents assisted by redirecting traffic and preventing people from attempting to collect the spilled fuel.

An ambulance provided by an international oil company was stationed nearby to handle any emergency casualties, although none were reported.

Authorities noted that tanker-related fires have previously led to heavy losses in the city, making the rapid response crucial in preventing another tragedy.

Recent investments in firefighting capacity also played a role, including the Federal Government’s provision of additional equipment and reforms by Governor Siminalayi Fubara to upgrade fire service operations across the state.

The upgrades covered the renovation of the main fire service headquarters near Isaac Boro Park and improvements to stations in Borokiri and Rumuodomaya.

Officials praised the coordinated emergency effort and advised motorists to remain cautious while safety checks continue in the area.
