MOSOP Rejects IYC Claim

The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) has rejected claims by the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) that the Ogoni people belong to the Ijaw ethnic group, describing the assertion as false and historically misleading.

In a statement released on Sunday, MOSOP said the Ogoni are a distinct ethnic nationality with a unique history, language, culture, and political development, stressing that they cannot be classified under any other ethnic group in the Niger Delta.

The organisation noted that Ogoni identity is well established and widely acknowledged both nationally and internationally, particularly in discussions around environmental justice, minority rights, and the struggles of indigenous peoples. It warned that attempts to alter or redefine recognised ethnic identities could generate unnecessary tension and threaten peaceful coexistence in the region.

MOSOP called on Niger Delta groups to show restraint and respect when addressing sensitive issues of identity, cautioning against narratives that could widen divisions among communities facing similar social and economic challenges.

The group urged leaders and stakeholders to focus instead on shared goals such as development, environmental remediation, and the overall progress of the Niger Delta, rather than engaging in what it described as divisive and counterproductive debates over identity.

Reiterating its commitment to non-violent advocacy, MOSOP said it would continue to protect the cultural heritage, autonomy, and legitimate rights of the Ogoni people within the framework of Nigeria’s constitution.
