Council Issues 7-Day Eviction Notice on Obiri-Ikwerre Flyover Encroachments

The Obio/Akpor Local Government Council has issued a seven-day eviction notice to traders and occupants of illegal structures around the Tam-David West Boulevard Interchange, popularly known as the Obiri-Ikwerre Flyover, as part of efforts to restore order and ensure public safety.

The directive, announced on Tuesday, covers all unauthorised kiosks, shanties, containers, stalls and temporary structures erected on the flyover, road setbacks, pedestrian walkways and adjoining right-of-way corridors. According to the council, these encroachments pose risks to motorists and pedestrians while obstructing the free flow of traffic.

In a statement, the council explained that the action falls within its statutory responsibility to protect public infrastructure, promote environmental sanitation and maintain orderly urban development within Obio/Akpor Local Government Area. It warned that all affected occupants must dismantle and remove their structures within seven days from the date of the notice.

The council made it clear that no compensation would be paid for any illegal structure removed during the exercise. It added that enforcement would begin immediately after the expiration of the notice, with full demolition and evacuation of all remaining structures carried out without further warning.

Defaulters, the council cautioned, would bear full responsibility for any losses arising from the enforcement exercise.

Chairman of the council, Hon. Dr Gift Worlu, appealed to traders and residents to comply with the directive in the interest of public safety and orderliness. He noted that the flyover is a critical piece of infrastructure that must be kept free of obstructions to ensure smooth traffic movement and reduce accidents.

Dr Worlu stressed that the council remains committed to sustainable urban development and urged the public to cooperate to achieve a safer and cleaner environment across the local government area.
