The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has announced the discovery of a new oil well, Awodi-07, in the shallow offshore western Niger Delta, describing the development as a significant boost to Nigeria’s hydrocarbon exploration efforts.

The discovery was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by NNPC’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh.

According to the statement, NNPC congratulated Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) on the successful drilling of the Awodi-07 appraisal and exploration well, which is operated by Chevron under the NNPC Ltd/CNL Joint Venture.

NNPC explained that the Awodi-07 well was drilled as part of the joint venture’s ongoing programme to further define and unlock hydrocarbon potential within its asset portfolio in the Niger Delta. Drilling activities reportedly began in late November 2025 and were completed by mid-December 2025.

“The drilling, testing and data acquisition activities were carried out safely and efficiently, in full compliance with approved operational and regulatory standards,” the company said.

Following comprehensive testing, logging and evaluation, NNPC said the well was safely secured, marking the successful conclusion of the drilling programme. Results from the exercise were described as highly encouraging, confirming the presence of significant hydrocarbon volumes across multiple reservoir zones.

NNPC noted that the outcome of the Awodi-07 discovery represents a major milestone for the joint venture, strengthening confidence in the asset and reinforcing the exploration potential of the area.

The company added that the success reflects disciplined exploration practices, strong technical evaluation and effective collaboration between NNPC Ltd and Chevron Nigeria Limited.

NNPC said the discovery aligns with the Federal Government’s broader efforts to fully harness Nigeria’s oil and mineral resources to drive sustainable economic growth and national development.
