Rivers CP Cautions Officers on Firearms Safety After Inspector’s Death

The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State (CP) Olugbenga Adepoju, has cautioned officers and men of the Command on the responsible handling of firearms following the death of a Police Inspector during an on-duty shooting incident in Port Harcourt.

The warning comes in the wake of a tragic incident that occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at a commercial facility in the Trans-Amadi area of the state, where police officers were deployed on joint security duty with military personnel.

One officer, Inspector Ibrahim Sani, lost his life, while another sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

It was noted that Inspector Victor Okus accidentally fired the shot.

Speaking through the Command’s Public Relations Officer Grace Iringe-Koko, the Commissioner described the incident as deeply unfortunate and stressed that the use of firearms is a serious responsibility that requires discipline, restraint and constant awareness of the safety of colleagues and the public.

He reminded officers that service weapons are not routine tools, warning that negligence or misuse could lead to irreversible consequences, as seen in the recent incident.

CP Adepoju also ordered a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, assuring that due process would be followed.

According to the Command, the officer alleged to be involved in the incident has been arrested and placed in custody, while internal disciplinary procedures and legal processes are underway.

The Commissioner extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer, as well as to his colleagues, describing the loss as a painful one to the Force and the nation.

The Rivers State Police Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability and the protection of lives, while urging officers to uphold the highest standards of conduct in the discharge of their duties.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
