Bayelsa Raises Waterway Safety Standards with New 38-Seater Ferry

The Bayelsa State Government has taken another step towards improving safety and efficiency on its waterways with the acquisition of a new 38-seater passenger ferry.

The Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Faith Zibs-Godwin, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Yenagoa, noting that the newly procured ferry forms part of an ongoing fleet renewal programme initiated by the ASSURED Prosperity Administration.

This was made know in a statement shared on Sunday.

According to her, the vessel is among the first set of rehabilitated and newly acquired marine assets already deployed for public use, adding that additional ferries and support crafts are expected to arrive in the state in the coming weeks.

Dr Zibs-Godwin said the initiative reflects the determination of the state government, under the leadership of Governor Douye Diri, to overhaul the marine transportation system and address longstanding safety concerns associated with ageing and poorly maintained boats.

She explained that the introduction of modern passenger ferries would not only reduce accidents on the waterways but also provide a more reliable and comfortable means of transportation for residents, particularly those in riverine communities who depend largely on water transport.

The commissioner further stated that improved marine transport infrastructure would stimulate economic activities by enhancing access to markets, workplaces and social services across the state’s coastal and riverine areas.

She reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to building a safe, inclusive and sustainable marine transport network, in line with the broader vision of the Prosperity Administration to unlock the full potential of Bayelsa’s marine and blue economy sector.

Dr Zibs-Godwin assured that strict safety and operational standards would continue to guide the deployment and management of marine vessels across the state to ensure the protection of lives and property on Bayelsa’s waterways.
