Rivers State Government Steps In to Resolve Border Tensions

Authorities in Rivers State have stepped forward to address a persistent territorial conflict between the Okoloma community in Oyigbo Local Government Area and the Ban-Ogoi community in Tai Local Government Area. The initiative culminated in a key stakeholders’ session held at the Government House in Port Harcourt on January 16, 2026, aimed at fostering lasting harmony through structured dialogue.

At the heart of the effort is the formation of a dedicated technical team charged with delineating a clear and enduring boundary line to end the friction. Presiding over the discussions, Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, who also chairs the State Boundary Commission, highlighted the importance of approaching the matter with civility and restraint. She encouraged representatives to mirror the conciliatory stance of Governor Siminalayi Fubara by channeling concerns through proper avenues, free from hostility.

Odu stressed that true progress depends on all sides embracing negotiation and adherence to established procedures over any form of aggression. The attendance of top officials from both local governments marked a pivotal moment, underscoring a shared resolve for unity. She praised the council leaders for their active role, viewing it as a strong signal of dedication to regional stability.

In turn, Oyigbo’s Dr. Okechukwu Akara Nwaogu and Tai’s Hon. Mbakpone Okpe voiced their firm support for amicable coexistence among residents. They emphasized that such tranquility is essential for drawing investments and essential projects to the area, while applauding the commission’s proactive measures in averting escalation.
