The Rivers State Police Command has adopted a strict zero-tolerance stance on any form of violence or electoral misconduct as the state gears up for the crucial bye-elections scheduled for February 21, 2026, in the Ahoada East II and Khana II constituencies of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
This firm commitment was delivered during a high-level stakeholders’ interactive forum convened in Port Harcourt on Thursday, bringing together representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), various political parties, security agencies, and civil society organizations to fine-tune preparations for the polls.
Speaking on behalf of the command, CSP James Njoku issued a stern warning that security forces will swiftly arrest and prosecute anyone caught engaging in ballot snatching, voter intimidation, or other electoral malpractices. He emphasized that the elections will proceed in a calm and orderly environment, calling on all voters to uphold peace and exercise their franchise responsibly.

The forum also highlighted INEC’s ongoing efforts to deepen grassroots participation. Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Gabriel Yomere, detailed plans for the second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise, which began on January 5. To make registration more accessible, the commission will rotate services across wards and registration areas in all 23 local government areas, ensuring eligible citizens can update or enroll with greater convenience.
Prof. Yomere stressed the importance of peaceful conduct throughout the process, urging political parties to prioritize issue-based campaigns and uphold internal democratic principles during their primaries. He assured stakeholders of INEC’s full readiness, including early deployment of trained personnel and timely distribution of election materials, to deliver credible, transparent, and inclusive bye-elections that reflect the true will of the people.
