Bayelsa Targets Children in New Vaccination Drive

Children across Bayelsa State aged between 9 months and 14 years are set to benefit from a state-wide vaccination campaign against measles and rubella, following new dates announced by the Bayelsa State Primary Healthcare Board.

The exercise, initially scheduled for 20th to 29th January 2026, will now take place from 27th January to 5th February 2026.

Dr. Williams Appah, Executive Secretary of the Board, explained that the adjustment was due to unforeseen challenges but reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding children’s health.

The initiative targets children in a critical age group, providing a preventive shield against measles and rubella, illnesses known for their high contagion rate and long-term health risks. In addition to vaccination at health centres, mobile teams will visit schools and communities to ensure that children in hard-to-reach areas are not left out.

Dr. Appah appealed to parents, caregivers, and local health partners to support the campaign, stressing that cooperation and awareness are key to preventing vaccine hesitancy and ensuring the exercise achieves maximum coverage.

“The Bayelsa State Primary Healthcare Board therefore solicits the cooperation and support of parents, caregivers, guardians, and healthcare partners ahead of the campaign to prevent vaccine hesitancy and non-compliance, and to ensure wide coverage and a successful exercise,” the document noted on Thursday.
