Nigerian Navy and NIMASA Forge Stronger Ties to Enhance Maritime Safety and Navigation

The Nigerian Navy has urged for greater cooperation with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), particularly in hydrographic efforts, to maintain and build upon the progress achieved in ensuring safer navigation across the country’s waters.

During a recent familiarization visit to NIMASA’s headquarters, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Mustapha, highlighted the remarkable achievements stemming from the enduring collaboration between the two organizations. He emphasized that this consistent alliance has played a key role in bringing about the present level of calm and stability in Nigeria’s maritime areas.

Rear Admiral Mustapha pointed out that closer integration of NIMASA’s C4i Centre with the Navy’s Falcon Eye surveillance system would markedly boost security through better information exchange. He expressed appreciation for NIMASA’s role in supplying and supporting key assets under the Deep Blue Project, which the Navy operates to strengthen its missions.

The admiral specifically praised the introduction of two advanced hydrographic vessels, NNS Lana and NNS Ochuzor, noting their sophisticated ability to pinpoint the precise position and dimensions of wrecks. These platforms have already elevated safety benchmarks in the sector, and he stressed the need for ongoing joint work with NIMASA to preserve and advance these improvements.

In response, NIMASA’s Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, underscored that heightened security in Nigeria’s territorial waters forms the foundation of President Bola Tinubu’s strategy for economic diversification. He described the maritime domain as central to the Renewed Hope Agenda and the broader push toward economic variety, adding that both NIMASA and the Navy bear a collective duty to create a secure environment where shipping and related activities can flourish confidently. This assurance draws investors and shipping firms to engage more actively in the sector.

Dr. Mobereola also recognized the steadfast dedication of the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, whose efforts have consistently driven positive outcomes in developing the Blue Economy. This renewed commitment signals a promising future for enhanced maritime governance and prosperity in Nigeria.
