The Chairman of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area in Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Aboiya-a Bob-Fubara, has reaffirmed his administration’s total commitment to the welfare of fallen heroes, veterans of the Nigerian Armed Forces, and their families.
Bob-Fubara gave the assurance while leading top government officials, political appointees, the legislative arm, security agencies, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders to mark the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at Abonnema, the council headquarters.
The ceremony, held on Thursday, January 15, 2026, formed part of nationwide activities to honour the supreme sacrifices of Nigerian military personnel in defence of the country’s unity, peace, and sovereignty.
Responding to concerns raised by members of the Nigerian Legion during the event, the chairman pledged that the gallant men and women who laid down their lives would continue to receive due recognition and support under his watch.
He paid glowing tributes to the fallen heroes, describing them as courageous patriots whose selfless service had laid the foundation for the freedom and relative peace enjoyed by Nigerians today.
In a move to promote greater inclusion and coordination, Bob-Fubara officially appointed the Akuku-Toru Chapter Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, ACC Bobmanuel Sam Somaribo, as Deputy Chief Protocol Officer of the local government.
The appointee is expected to work closely with the chairman’s office to ensure proper representation and engagement of veterans during official functions.

The highlight of the solemn ceremony was the laying of wreaths, led by Chairman Bob-Fubara. This was followed by representatives of the Akuku-Toru Council of Chiefs, service commanders from the Army and Navy, the Divisional Police Officer, and officials of the Nigerian Legion.
Prayers for serving officers, veterans, widows, and dependents were offered by Christian and Muslim clerics, after which the Anniversary Register was signed.
