Rivers Begins Free Health Outreach at Upgraded Woji PHC

The Rivers State Government has launched a two-day free medical outreach following the official unveiling of the revitalised Woji Model Primary Health Centre, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening primary healthcare delivery at the grassroots.

The event, organised through the Rivers State Primary Healthcare Management Board (RSPHCMB), marked a turning point for the facility, which had suffered years of neglect before its recent upgrade into a modern and fully equipped health centre.

Residents of Woji and neighbouring communities turned out in large numbers to access free medical consultations, routine health screenings and essential medications, as health officials described the outreach as part of a broader strategy to bring affordable and quality healthcare closer to the people.

Representing the Commissioner for Health, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr Justina Jumbo, said the revitalisation of the centre aligns with the state government’s vision of building a resilient and people-centred health system.

She noted that strong primary healthcare facilities remain the foundation for effective service delivery and improved health outcomes.

Also speaking, Chairman of the RSPHCMB, Dr Dawari George, said the upgrade of the Woji facility reflects the government’s resolve to reposition primary health centres as the first and most reliable point of care for communities.

Executive Secretary of the Board, Dr Chituru Adele, disclosed that a key feature of the upgrade is the permanent posting of a medical doctor to the facility to guarantee 24-hour healthcare services.

He urged residents, traditional leaders and local authorities to take ownership of the centre and ensure its proper utilisation and protection.

Stakeholders from Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, alongside chiefs and community representatives, commended the intervention, describing it as a long-awaited relief that would ease the burden of healthcare costs on residents.

Community leaders pledged to safeguard the facility, expressing optimism that the revitalised centre would significantly improve access to timely and affordable healthcare in the area.
