Okaka Community in Bayelsa State Tasks Government on Developmental Projects in the Area

The people of Okaka Autonomous Federated Community in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State rolled the drums for the Obigbo Day celebration, a festival for the re-union of the kith and kin of the Community.

The ceremony which took place at the Okaka Primary School Field in Yenagoa also witnessed the official presentation of staff of office to the paramount ruler of the community, Chief Morrison Itelimo Odede.

Natives defied a downpour to mark the Obigbo Festival.

Okaka is one of the major communities that make up Epie Kingdom in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State located along the Epie and Ekoli Creeks which are tributaries of the Nun and Orashi Rivers.

Situated at the heart of the Bayelsa State capital, Yenagoa, Okaka plays hosts to strategic government establishments including the Federal Correctional Centre, the Nigeria Immigration and Customs head offices, Zone 16 Command of the Nigeria Police and the Mobility Command of the Nigerian Air Force in Bayelsa among others.

During the 2025 Obigbo Day, it was a celebration of the success of the Okaka Community as the people converged to celebrate their common ancestry and cultural heritage.

The Obenaken of Okaka, His Royal Highness Chief Morrison Itelimo Odede, the Obigbo Kiti-Kiti the Sixth said the Festival brings together all the descendants of the Community who migrated to settle in other communities such as Ekeki, Azikoro, Yenegwe all in Yenagoa LGA and Ewoi in Ogbia LGA  to their ancestral home following a family disagreement long time ago.

The Paramount ruler who officially received his staff of office on the occasion however urged government to reward Okaka community with developmental projects for being peaceful hosts to several key federal and State institutions in Bayelsa.

Earlier, a representative of Governor Douye Diri, the Technical Adviser on Community and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Bertola Perekeme congratulated the Obenaken and people of Okaka for a successful ceremony, urging him to unite all interests in the community.

Highpoints of the event were unveiling, inauguration and administering of oath of office to newly appointed Chiefs known as Onuomo-Aken and Odie-Aken to assist in administering the Okaka Federated Autonomous community, Obigbo traditional talking drum and cultural displays.
