Wike Rules Out Second Term for Fubara

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said his successor and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, would not secure a second term in office.

Wike, a former Rivers governor, made the declaration during his recent “thank-you visit” to Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA) Local Government Area, where he openly vowed to stop Fubara from returning as governor.

He accused the governor of reneging on the terms of the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu following the political crisis in Rivers State.

According to Wike, Fubara could not use money to resolve a crisis he allegedly created. The FCT minister challenged Fubara to disclose to Rivers people the details of his discussions with the president.

“If you succeeded with the first resolution, you will not succeed with the second. There cannot be two captains in one ship. Anyone assuring you that shouting ‘mandate’ will solve everything is deceiving you,” Wike said.

Wike further described Fubara as a poor leader, alleging that he failed to maintain cordial working relationships with local government chairpersons, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, National Assembly members and other key stakeholders.

“Anyone who cannot relate with local government chairmen, state assembly members, National Assembly members and other stakeholders cannot provide good leadership,” he added. He also reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring President Tinubu’s re-election.

Fubara was elected governor of Rivers State in 2023 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in December last year. He was sworn in on 29 May 2023, and his first term is expected to end on 29 May 2027.

Although there are strong indications that he may seek re-election, Fubara has yet to formally declare his intention.
