The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has officially dismissed recent media reports alleging a widespread tuberculosis (TB) outbreak in its custodial centers. In a statement released on Sunday, the Service labeled these claims as “unfounded and misleading.”
According to the NCoS, the reports do not reflect verified medical records. Instead, they rely on generalized claims that misinform the public about the health status of inmates across the country.
▌Setting the Record Straight on Inmate Welfare
Chief Superintendent of Corrections Jane Osuji, who serves as the Service’s Public Relations Officer, addressed the issue. She stated that while the NCoS welcomes media engagement, it must respond to “sweeping generalizations” that do not show the true situation.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service’s verified records do not reflect the names or cases cited in the report,” Osuji noted. Consequently, the Service believes that the narrative presented by some media outlets relies on inaccurate conclusions.
▌Following National and Global Health Standards
The NCoS clarified that its response to tuberculosis is not handled in isolation. In fact, Nigeria’s TB response is guided by the Federal Ministry of Health. Specifically, the NCoS works through the National Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Control Programme.
Furthermore, all health protocols in Nigerian prisons align with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. Because TB is a global health issue, the NCoS ensures that its facilities meet the same standards as the general population to prevent the spread of the disease.

During the statement, Osuji emphasized the importance of accurate reporting. She urged journalists to rely on verified, facility-specific data rather than “conjecture or selective testimonies.”
According to the NCoS, sensational headlines can cause unnecessary panic. Therefore, the Service encourages the media to verify medical cases with official prison records before publishing. This ensures that the public receives a clear and honest view of custodial health.

The NCoS concluded by reaffirming its dedication to the well-being of persons in custody. The Service recognizes that custodial health is inseparable from national public health.
