FRSC Corps Marshal Unleashes Nationwide Crackdown to Curb Festive Road Crashes

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has ordered a nationwide crackdown on traffic violations with the full deployment of personnel and operational assets to curb road crashes during the peak end-of-year travel period.

The directive, issued to all Commanding Officers across the federation on Saturday, marks the commencement of Operation Zero Tolerance Exercise, a high-impact nationwide special operation designed to enforce traffic discipline, ensure free flow of traffic and protect lives on Nigerian roads throughout the festive season.

Operation Zero, which began on 15 December 2025 and will run until 15 January 2026, features round-the-clock patrols, strategic traffic management, rapid emergency response and aggressive enforcement of traffic laws. F

RSC formations have been directed to prioritise critical corridors, crash-prone locations, gridlock points and major inter-state routes, with sustained visibility of personnel aimed at deterring traffic violations.

Under the directive, the Corps Marshal ordered 100% deployment of patrol teams, ambulances and operational equipment, including speed-limiting devices, stressing that Commanding Officers must lead from the front and ensure discipline, professionalism and integrity among operatives.

He warned that any form of negligence, compromise or dereliction of duty would attract severe sanctions.

Mohammed declared zero tolerance for mixed loading and distracted driving, cautioning that vehicles conveying passengers alongside goods or animals, as well as drivers using mobile phones or engaging in other distractions while driving, would be decisively sanctioned during the operation.

He also called on construction and road maintenance companies working on major highways to open up carriageways, clear avoidable bottlenecks and provide effective traffic control around work zones to ease congestion and reduce travel hardship during the festive rush.

Beyond enforcement, the operation places strong emphasis on public enlightenment and stakeholder engagement. FRSC personnel have been directed to intensify safety advocacy in motor parks, markets, religious centres and other public spaces, reminding motorists that speeding, drunk driving, dangerous overtaking, overloading and disregard for road signs remain leading causes of fatal crashes.

The Corps Marshal further urged enhanced collaboration with sister security agencies, emergency responders, transport unions and community leaders to ensure smooth traffic control and swift response to crashes and road obstructions.

He said the success of Operation Zero would be measured by reduced road traffic crashes, fewer injuries and fatalities, improved travel time and increased public confidence in road safety management.

Reaffirming the Corps’ commitment to its statutory mandate, Mohammed appealed to road users to take personal responsibility for safety and cooperate with FRSC operatives, stressing that every crash is preventable and every life matters. He assured Nigerians that the Corps remains fully mobilised to deliver safer roads and a festive season free from avoidable tragedies, in line with its vision of zero crashes, zero injuries and zero deaths on Nigerian roads.
