Fubara Commissions 9.7km Emohua–Ogbakiri–Egbelu Road, Calls for Asset Protection

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has commissioned the 9.7-kilometre Emohua–Ogbakiri Roundabout–Egbelu Road in Emohua Local Government Area, urging host communities to protect public assets to ensure sustained development.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the Ogbakiri Waterfront, Governor Fubara described the project as a significant intervention, executed despite what he said were severe financial and legal constraints facing his administration.

He noted that the road complements the East–West Road and improves access and connectivity to several riverine and mainland communities, including Ogbakiri, Tema Junction, Abalama, Abonnema and Buguma.

The governor commended the Ogbakiri community for maintaining peace throughout the construction period, stressing that stability and cooperation were key factors in the successful completion of the project.

He assured residents that communities that embrace peace would continue to enjoy government support and development projects.

Responding to requests by the Council of Chiefs, Governor Fubara said appeals for internal roads and a bridge in the area would be carefully assessed for possible execution. He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to delivering on its promises, even while operating under restrictive court orders, and called on residents to safeguard public facilities, including the university campus in Emohua.

Providing technical details, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Dr Austin Ezekiel-Hart, said the road, awarded in September 2024, has a 7.3-metre-wide carriageway in built-up areas, reinforced pavement layers, 4.5 kilometres of concrete drainage and culverts.

In his welcome address, Dr Chidi Lloyd thanked the governor for fulfilling his pledge, describing the road as a major boost to transportation, commerce and economic activities in the area. Governor Fubara concluded by emphasising that peace remains essential for sustainable development.
