Fubara Restates Health Priorities, Wins UNICEF Commendation

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery in Rivers State, particularly for women, children and other vulnerable groups. 

The governor made the pledge during a courtesy visit by UNICEF Country Director, Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef, and her delegation at Government House, Port Harcourt.

In a statement issued by Juliana Masi, Head of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Fubara represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba said his administration is prioritizing investment in modern health infrastructure to improve access and quality of care.

He highlighted ongoing efforts, including the construction of new zonal hospitals across the state. 

According to him, the Ahoada Zonal Hospital is set for commissioning in December, while other facilities are nearing completion. Fubara expressed appreciation to UNICEF for its longstanding partnership and emphasized the need for stronger collaboration, noting that the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, would continue to facilitate improved communication and joint initiatives.

UNICEF Country Director, Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef, commended the Rivers State Government for its commitment to improving health services and assured continued support for key programmes. 

She urged the government to prioritize the solarization of essential health facilities, including the oxygen plant in Eleme Local Government Area and newborn care units, to ensure uninterrupted services.

Abdelatef noted that UNICEF considers Rivers State a model for effective programme implementation and pledged sustained collaboration to advance health outcomes. 

She reaffirmed the organization’s readiness to expand its support as the state intensifies efforts to deliver accessible and reliable healthcare for its residents.
