Agency Warns Nigerians Over Unregistered Edible Oils

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned Nigerians about the increasing presence of unregistered edible oils being openly sold in markets across the country.

The warning, issued on Tuesday through a statement on the agency’s X handle, highlighted the discovery of several brands—among them FINO, PUR, OKI, SUPER DELICIEX and LA JONIC—said to be circulating without verified sources, production details or safety certification.

According to NAFDAC, the products are being smuggled into Nigeria and distributed under various brand names in major commercial hubs, including Onitsha, Aba, Owerri, Warri, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Ikom, Calabar, and several parts of Lagos such as Trade Fair, Okiarin, Ikotun and Mushin.

Other affected areas include Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Yola, Gombe, Bauchi, Idiroko, Makurdi and Lafia.

To this end, the agency noted that the alert followed concerns raised by Lebruni Agro Limited, a local producer of hygienically processed soybean and palm kernel oils, which reported the widespread sale of inferior and unregulated products following its internal market checks.

NAFDAC further disclosed that the questionable oils bear no manufacturer identification or registration numbers and are absent from its regulatory database, reinforcing suspicions that the products do not meet national standards.

The agency urged consumers and traders to exercise caution and to immediately report any suspected substandard or unregistered edible oils to the nearest NAFDAC office to safeguard public health.
