First Lady Urges Stronger Fight Against HIV

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged citizens, health stakeholders, and communities across the country to intensify efforts toward eliminating HIV/AIDS by 2030.

Her call came in a statement posted on her X handle on Monday to mark World AIDS Day 2025, celebrated globally every December 1.

This year’s commemoration, themed “Overcoming Disruptions; Transforming the AIDS Response,” highlights the need for countries to strengthen health systems, expand access to treatment, and eliminate stigma that continues to hinder progress.

Mrs Tinubu noted that while Nigeria has recorded remarkable improvements in HIV prevention, treatment, and care, more collective action is required to achieve an AIDS-free nation within the next five years.

She stressed that every Nigerian deserves access to life-saving services without fear, discrimination, or shame. According to her, the fight against HIV/AIDS must extend beyond hospitals to families, communities, and institutions where stigma often begins.

The First Lady encouraged young people, who remain one of the most vulnerable groups, to prioritise their health by knowing their HIV status and adhering to treatment if they test positive.

The First Lady also appealed to communities to embrace compassion, support individuals living with HIV, and actively reject all forms of stigmatisation. She reaffirmed her commitment to championing initiatives that promote awareness, prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment uptake across the country.

World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1, serves as a global reminder of the ongoing struggle against HIV/AIDS. It honours people living with the virus, commemorates those lost to AIDS-related illnesses, and reinforces the global resolve to end the epidemic.
