Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar Resigns On Health Grounds

The minister of defence, Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his position with immediate effect. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy revealed this on Monday.

In a statement posted on his social media platforms, Onanuga noted that the resignation, which came amid the rise of insecurity in the country, was on health grounds.

Onanuga noted that Badaru made his resignation known in a letter dated December 1 and sent to Tinubu. He added that while accepting Badaru’s resignation, Tinubu appreciated him for his services to the nation.

According to Onanuga, Tinubu will forward Badaru’s successor name later this week to the Senate in accordance with the constitution.

The now resigned minister, a 63-year-old served two-term as a governor of Jigawa State.His tenure was from 2015 to 2023. Tinubu then appointed him as a minister on August 21, 2023.

Badaru’s resignation came at a time when all hands must be on deck to address insecurity, especially as Tinubu declared a national security emergency. The Tinubu declaration was planned to elaborate on its scope in due course.

The Port City News (TCPN) reported that the nation witnessed several insecurity in the past weeks. From church attacks in Kwara State to kidnapping in Kebbi and Niger States.

Though the earlier abductees regained freedom, another set of citizens were kidnapped again with ransom being demanded.

In Kwara, 38 were kidnapped from the Eruku community CAC church, 50 in Kebbi school and in Niger State.
