Rivers Women Police Mark 70th Anniversary with GBV Walk

As part of events marking the 70th anniversary of the Nigeria Women Police, hundreds of female officers in Rivers State on Saturday, November 29, 2025, held a solidarity walk in Port Harcourt to raise awareness on gender-based violence (GBV).

The officers marched from the Police Headquarters on Moscow Road to the Officers’ Mess in Old GRA, dancing, singing, and sensitizing residents on the dangers and consequences of GBV.

Speaking to journalists, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Umana Mary Ekaette said the exercise was designed to deepen public awareness around the growing menace of GBV.

She commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, for championing the initiative, and praised the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG Aishatu Baju, the Force Gender Adviser, for her leadership and consistent support for women in the Force.

“The IGP handed over the arrangement of the programme to her. She has visited all state commands in preparation for the event,” CSP Ekaette noted. She also thanked the Rivers State Commissioner of Police for providing logistics support.

According to her, the 70th anniversary celebration has featured several activities, including courtesy visits to retired female police officers. “We are lucky to have the most senior retired female police officer in Rivers State, and we visited her. The IGP has changed the narrative for women in policing.”

In her remarks, Superintendent of Police (SP) Grace Iringe-Koko, the Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State Police Command, expressed gratitude to the IGP, AIG Baju, and CP Olugbenga Adepoju for their roles in making the celebration successful.

“We are celebrating 70 years of women in the Police. We are mothers, wives, and professionals. I am proud to be a policewoman because a woman is all-round professionalism, social life, and intellect combined,” she said.

She also acknowledged the contributions of ACP Titilola Akanbi towards the success of the programme and urged the public to remain security conscious, reminding them that “the Police is your friend.”

Other participating officers echoed their pride in serving in the Nigeria Police Force and reaffirmed their commitment to promoting safety, unity, and public trust.
