A man identified as Matthew has died after he was allegedly taken by suspected leaders of a Deygbam cult faction to their makeshift “barracks” in Diobu, Port Harcourt, where he was reportedly beaten as punishment over claims he planned to sell his three-year-old daughter.
Dependable sources told Revelation Agent that Matthew’s pregnant lover, with whom he shared a residence at Odunezelane, Mile 3 Diobu, had accused him before the senior cultist members.
She reportedly alleged that Matthew intended to sell their child, prompting the cult members to summon him for disciplinary action.
According to eyewitnesses, the men arrived at the house late on Friday, 21 November 2025, and forcibly took Matthew to their base.
He was said to have been severely assaulted and later collapsed. He died before any help could be rendered, while both the suspected attackers and the woman fled the scene.
In reaction to the incident, a combined police team reportedly carried out a raid in Odunezelane on Saturday evening, although the publication could not independently confirm the number of suspects apprehended.

Sources familiar with the workings of the Deygbam and rival cult groups warned that the killing could trigger renewed clashes, potentially threatening the relative peace the area has enjoyed in recent months.
Security analysts say that unless swift action is taken by the Police and other security agencies, inter-group hostilities may escalate.
The Rivers State Command as at the time of filing this report are yet to comment on the issue.
Multiple sources within the community, however, confirmed the incident and the growing tension it has generated.
