The Rivers State Government (RSG) has commenced preparations for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) by inaugurating a Central Planning Committee to organize the annual commemoration.
This was announced in a statement posted on the social media page of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) on Thursday.
The statement was signed by Juliana Masi, Head of the Information and Public Relations Unit in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.
Masi said the committee was inaugurated in Port Harcourt on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Benibo Anabraba, who will also serve as its Chairman.
Masi added that Dr Anabraba emphasised the government’s profound appreciation for the ultimate sacrifices made by Nigeria’s fallen heroes in defense of the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated,” Dr Anabraba stated.

“The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice.”
Masi said the SSG extended recognition to all security agencies operating within the state, underscoring the importance of the event in acknowledging their continuous contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed nationwide on January 15, is dedicated to honoring Nigeria’s departed soldiers and veterans.
The inauguration of the planning committee signals the formal start of the state’s activities leading up to the commemoration in early 2026.
