Duncan Mighty Claims Port Harcourt As the Foundation of Afrobeats

Legendary singer Duncan Mighty has stirred fre sh debate in the music community after asserting that he and several Port Harcourt-born musicians helped shape the Afrobeats sound dominating global charts today.

According to him, “In almost every Afrobeats song today you can hear the Port Harcourt influence, especially the Ikwerri slangs.”

This revelation was made during a recent conversation with Hip TV, where the artist highlighted that creatives from Port Harcourt — including himself, Timaya, Burna Boy and Omah Lay — deeply influenced the genre by infusing it with the city’s unique slang, rhythms and sonic identity.

He insisted that the city’s distinct flavour can no longer be separated from the sound fans now recognize worldwide: “You can’t hear any Afrobeats song today and you will not hear a spice of Port Harcourt. Almost every Afrobeats song today has the flavour of Port Harcourt sound.”

Duncan Mighty further added that he and other stars from the region played a critical role in crafting what is now accepted as the modern Afrobeats blueprint: “I, Burna Boy, Timaya, Omah Lay and Port Harcourt sound built the foundation of today’s Afrobeats,” he claimed.

His remarks have triggered diverse reactions online, with some listeners acknowledging Port Harcourt’s contribution, while others argue that he is “overemphasising” the city’s role in the evolution of Afrobeats.
