A single thread of dialogue can weave a tapestry of peace, and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) recent forum with traditional rulers has pulled the threads together, stitching hope for a harmonious Niger Delta.
The forum, themed “Peace Building and Conflict Management in Communities,” served as a vital platform for evaluating the Commission’s achievements and identifying areas for improvement.
The Managing Director, Dr. Ogbuku’s assertion that the Niger Delta is one of the most peaceful regions in Nigeria is a testament to the effectiveness of the NDDC’s Collaboration with local leaders. This synergy has yielded positive results, and it must continue to be strengthened.
Traditional rulers have long played a pivotal role in settling disputes and promoting peace in the Niger Delta region, particularly in Rivers State. Their influence and understanding of local customs enable them to be effective mediators in resolving conflicts over land resources and community issues.

For instance, the Amayanabo of Kalabari Kingdom, His Majesty, King (Prof.) T.N.C. Owei recently facilitated a peaceful resolution to a land dispute between two Communities in Akoni and Degema, averting potential violence.
The NDDC’s acknowledgement of their contributions and engagement of traditional rulers in dialogue to promote peace and stability is to foster harmony and drive development in the region.
The presence of Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, NDDC Executive Director of Corporate Services, who represented the Managing Director physically, alongside other Directors of the Commission, at the Banquet Hall, Presidential Hotel, Port Harcourt, today, November 11th, underscored the importance of this partnership.
As the NDDC continues to work towards the development of the Niger Delta, the support and cooperation of traditional rulers remain crucial. This forum has undoubtedly laid the groundwork for a brighter future for the region.
