CAF Unveils AFCON Official Ball

The Official Match Ball for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set to take place in Morocco has been unveiled.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and global sportswear brand PUMA unveiled the ball on Monday.

In a statement published on its website CAF revealed that the ball, named ITRI, draws inspiration from Morocco’s centuries-old zellij art form—celebrated for its intricate geometric mosaics—and symbolises the unity and passion of African football across the continent.

CAF added that the name also pays tribute to the star featured on Morocco’s national flag and reflects the star patterns deeply rooted in traditional zellij craftsmanship.

PUMA marked the official launch with a reveal video showcasing the ITRI ball, which CAF described as a key milestone in the build-up to the tournament.

The ITRI ball will make its debut in the opening match of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025.

According to CAF, the ball’s design incorporates traditional Moroccan zellij geometric patterns, featuring central star geometry, floral petal outlines, and circular symmetry—all reflecting Morocco’s rich artistic heritage and Africa’s collective football spirit.

“Each design element carries cultural significance: Star geometry symbolises ambition, light, and the pursuit of excellence on Africa’s biggest footballing stage. Petal shapes represent celebration, growth and the festive spirit that defines the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON.

“Circular symmetry reflects the unity of the 24 nations coming together for the tournament. The unique design also features ‘Flow of Movement’ patterns that capture the distinctive rhythm and dynamic playing style of African football.

“The ball’s red and green colour palette expresses passion, hope and pride while also paying homage to Morocco’s national identity”, said CAF.

The ball was crafted using PUMA’s advanced Orbita 6 technology, seamlessly blending heritage with innovation to deliver elite performance standards while celebrating African culture.

Speaking on the launch, CAF Creative Development Manager, Mohamed Ghonemi, said the AFCON 2025 match ball embodies a fusion of art, motion, and design inspired by African spirit and Moroccan craftsmanship.

Ghonemi explained that the ball was created to capture the rhythm of African football, describing the collaboration with PUMA as “a privilege” and “a unifying project connecting every nation through a shared sense of identity.”

He noted that the design process began soon after Morocco was confirmed as host nation and evolved through several stages of cultural research, creative exploration, performance testing, and refinement.

“The collaboration brought together CAF’s creative development team and PUMA’s global design unit to ensure the ball authentically reflects Moroccan artistry while resonating across the continent,” Ghonemi added.

Similarly, Peter Dangl, Director of EEMEA Distribution at PUMA, expressed pride in unveiling the ITRI ball, describing it as “a true symbol of African football’s spirit.”

Dangl noted that by combining Moroccan artistry with cutting-edge performance technology, the ITRI ball celebrates both the host nation’s heritage and the unity of the African continent. He added that PUMA’s collaboration with CAF reaffirms the brand’s lasting commitment to African football and the communities that bring it to life.

The AFCON 2025 tournament will kick off on 21 December 2025 in Morocco, bringing together the continent’s finest footballing nations for Africa’s most prestigious competition.
