Nigeria to Benefit from Bloomberg’s $100m Methane Push

Former New York City Mayor and billionaire philanthropist Michael Bloomberg has unveiled a $100 million global investment to combat methane emissions — one of the world’s most potent greenhouse gases. The initiative aims to strengthen satellite-based monitoring and data sharing to help countries like Nigeria detect and reduce methane leaks more effectively.

The funding will expand a global network of satellites and data systems that track methane emissions in real time, providing governments and regulators with actionable insights. By improving access to accurate data, the initiative will enable policymakers to target and mitigate methane sources in sectors such as energy, agriculture, and waste management.

Nigeria stands among the key beneficiaries of this effort, along with Australia, Indonesia, and Mexico. For Nigeria, the investment brings an opportunity to harness cutting-edge satellite data and technical support to identify and repair major methane leaks.

This advancement could play a pivotal role in the country’s climate change mitigation efforts and its transition toward cleaner energy practices.

Scientists have long warned that methane, though less abundant than carbon dioxide, is around 80 times more potent in trapping heat over 20 years. Reducing methane emissions is considered one of the fastest and most effective ways to slow global warming in the short term.

Bloomberg’s investment will also support policy development and empower nations to design more effective emission reduction strategies. Coming ahead of major international climate negotiations, the initiative highlights the urgency of curbing methane leaks — a key driver of rising global temperatures.

By leveraging advanced satellite technology and global cooperation, the project places Nigeria at the center of Africa’s climate innovation efforts, offering both data and technical capacity to reduce emissions and safeguard the environment.
