Just four days after its commissioning, the tank’s premature collapse yesterday, is a damning proof of the second-rate construction, poor materials, and lack of oversight that has become all too familiar in our society. The age-old adage “building on shaky foundations is like trying to hold water in a leaking bucket” has never been more suitable. No matter how much investment is poured into development projects, it will inevitably drain away, leaving behind a trail of frustration and disappointment.
The Gwara Water Project done and commissioned by HYPREP was intended to bring relief and clean water to the community, but its collapse has severely undermined this objective. The people of Ogoni deserve better infrastructure that can reliably deliver clean water, especially given the historical impact of oil spillage and environmental pollution in the region. The poor sanitary state of Ogoni land is no longer hidden, and it’s imperative that the government takes immediate action to address this crisis.

The Ogoni region has been ravaged by decades of reckless oil exploitation, with devastating consequences for the environment, livelihoods, and health of its people. The impact on local communities has been severe, with farming and fishing livelihoods affected and residents reporting various health issues. The region’s life expectancy is a staggering 41 years, significantly lower than the national average, highlighting the dire consequences of environmental degradation.
Despite the suspension of oil exploration in Ogoniland in 1993, the region still suffers the consequences of environmental damage. The agreement between certain Ogoni leaders and the Tinubu administration to restart oil exploration in the area in September 2025 is a betrayal of the trust placed in the system. How can we expect the people of Ogoni to trust the government and oil industry when they continue to prioritize profits over people and the environment?
