FG Mandates Data Submission for All Tertiary Institutions

The Federal Ministry of Education has launched an initiative to enforce transparency and accountability across the nation’s tertiary education sector with the unveiling of the Federal Government Tertiary Institution Governance and Transparency Platform (FTIGTP).

Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa in a statement on Tuesday, November 4, said the platform was jointly launched by him and Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad. The FTIGTP is a unified national database designed to provide real-time visibility into critical institutional data, marking a “groundbreaking reform” for evidence-based policymaking.

The data to be captured will include student enrolment figures, research funding, and interventions from both the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). Alausa described the launch as a major milestone, noting its special significance as it coincided with his one-year anniversary in office.

He emphasised that the initiative reflects a shift in attitude, as tertiary institutions are now embracing the transparency that the platform seeks to establish as a national standard. In a firm directive, the minister announced that compliance will be mandatory for all federal tertiary institutions.

Effective 2026, all Federal Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education must submit annual institutional and financial data to the FTIGTP. Crucially, TETFund ICT allocations will be strictly tied to verified data submissions. The minister issued a clear warning: “No institution will be eligible for TETFund ICT interventions without full data submission and clearance.”

He said the measure aligns fully with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for transparency and accountability in public service. Alausa thanked all Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, and Provosts who attended the launch for their commitment to the reform, affirming that the collective effort is building a more transparent, efficient, and globally competitive higher education system for Nigeria.

Former Minister of Aviation and Chancellor of the Athena Centre for Policy and Leadership, Osita Chidoka, offered insightful remarks at the event, recognising the FTIGTP as “a timely and essential step toward transforming Nigeria’s tertiary education system.”
