“Promote Rivers Culture Through Your Films,” Government Urges Movie Producers

The Rivers State Government has urged film producers, scriptwriters, and directors in the state to use their craft to promote the state’s rich cultural heritage.

Juliana Masi, Head of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), stated this in a release on Monday.

According to the statement, the SSG, Dr Benibo Anabraba, gave the charge while receiving a delegation from the Rivers State International Film Festival in Port Harcourt.

Dr Anabraba explained that Governor Siminalayi Fubara recognised the immense socio-cultural and economic benefits of tourism, which informed the government’s decision to embark on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiative to rehabilitate, develop, and rebrand the Port Harcourt Tourist Beach in Borokiri.

He noted that the creative industry holds the potential to boost the economy, enrich social and cultural life, and generate employment opportunities for the youth.

“Just some days ago, His Excellency also inspected the Ngo-Atlantic- Oyorokoto Road area, which is a vast shoreline that the government is assiduously working on to provide infrastructure with the vision of creating a hub for investors and investments in furtherance to harnessing the limitless values of the blue economy.

“If you check online, you will see that people have posted videos of the sighting of elephants and other exotic animals around that area. We’re also planning on creating conservation parks in these pristine environments for the protection of nature and entertainment”, he said.

He emphasised that one of the beauties of filmmaking lies in its scenery, adding that he believes the Oyorokoto area offers such picturesque views that can help bring it into the limelight.

Anabraba urged filmmakers to use their works to showcase local culture, noting that films ultimately serve as valuable archives for future generations, helping them understand and appreciate their roots.

“Be assured that we will work with you to preserve our history and culture. On behalf of His Excellency, I thank you for creating a platform that enables collaboration and promotes cross fertilization of culture across the African continent, with the ability to change the narrative on its people before the World”, he stated.

He expressed his gratitude to the delegates from Zimbabwe and Ghana for their visit, appreciating the hospitality and security they enjoyed during their brief stay in the state.

Ezeigbo emphasised that the festival aimed to add value to the film industry, celebrate creativity, and promote empowerment.
